South
24 Parganas: Manipal Hospital, EM Bypass (Previously known as
Medica Superspecialty Hospital) continues to lead
in advanced cardiac care with a lifesaving, state-of-the-art procedure
performed by Dr. Arindam Pande,
Senior Consultant, Department of Cardiology and Consultant Interventional
Cardiologist who successfully treated an elderly patient suffering from a
life-threatening pulmonary embolism
(lung blood clot) using a cutting-edge
endovascular technique. This minimally invasive method involves the
insertion of fine catheters through a vein to directly access and remove the
clot, eliminating the need for open surgery and enabling faster recovery with
fewer complications.
Manju
Saha (name changed)a 77‑year‑old woman from South 24 Parganas with high blood
pressure and other health issues diagnosed with acute pulmonary thromboembolism, a life-threatening condition
whereby clots migrate from the veins to the lungs. Due to her bleeding risk, conventional blood
thinners were not an option. Instead, Dr. Arindam Pande used mechanical clot removal
with the Penumbra Indigo® Aspiration
System (an advanced mechanical thrombectomy device), which effectively
“vacuumed” the clots out of the lung arteries. To prevent new clots from
traveling to the lungs, the team also placed a temporary inferior vena cava
(IVC) filter, a small net-like device inserted into a large vein in the abdomen
to catch clots coming from the legs. Once her condition was stabilized and the
risk was gone, the filter was safely removed. This approach saved her life,
relieved her symptoms, and avoided the dangers of major surgery.
Dr.
Arindam Pande, Senior Consultant, Department of Cardiology and
Consultant Interventional Cardiologistat Manipal
Hospital, EM Bypass (Previously known as Medica Superspecialty
Hospital) added by saying “Mechanical thrombectomy using advanced tools like
the Penumbra system gives us the ability to treat patients safely and quickly,
especially when traditional methods pose risks. Our goal is always to tailor
care for everyone, and this case shows what is possible when innovation meets
timely action.”
The
77-year-old patient, Manju Saha (name changed) who is now fully
recovered, stated, “I couldn’t breathe properly and was scared I might not
survive. But thanks to Dr. Pande and his team, I felt better within days. It is
like I got a second life.”
What makes Manipal different is not just scale, but the ability to
respond in real time. With 500+ critical care beds, 75 expert
cardiologists, 15 highly skilled cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons (CTVS),
and seven advanced Cath Labs placed strategically to serve patients from North
24 Parganas.24x7 emergency
teams, and in-house specialists for nephrology, endocrinology, neurology, and
more, ensuring no delay in life-saving decisions. Every year it carries out more
than 30,000 cardiac procedures and over 3,000 cardiac surgeries.
