Kolkata : As the world observes World Lung Cancer Day, Kolkata’s Medella Karkinos Oncology Institute (Karkinos Healthcare Kolkata), one of the leading purpose-driven technology-led oncology platforms, is reiterating the urgent need for early detection, regular health check-ups, and a tobacco-free lifestyle to reduce the burden of lung cancer, one of the most fatal yet preventable forms of cancer globally. To mark the day, the Centre organized an awareness session, highlighting Early Symptoms, Risk Factors and Preventive Lifestyle Measures, to prevent the disease.
Lung
cancer is a significant public health concern, causing a considerable number of
deaths globally, largely due to late diagnosis and lack of awareness. Despite
significant advances in treatment, survival rates remain low when the disease
is detected at advanced stages.
Dr. Akther Jawade, Director East, Karkinos
Healthcare said, "We cannot overstate the
importance of early detection when it comes to lung cancer. Screening high-risk
individuals, especially those with a history of smoking, can mean the
difference between life and death. The sooner we detect, the better we can
treat. Smoking tobacco is the primary risk factor for lung cancer but it can
also affect non-smokers. Other risk factors include exposure to second-hand
smoke, air pollution or previous chronic lung diseases. Early symptoms often
overlap with other respiratory conditions, which is why regular health
check-ups are vital, especially for people with a history of smoking or
exposure to air pollution.”
Lung
cancer can cause several symptoms that may indicate a problem in the lungs. The
most common symptoms include: Persistent cough, Shortness of breath, Chest pain,
Coughing up blood, Unexplained weight loss, among others.
Dr. Akther Jawade
added, “With medical advancements, a
range of targeted therapies, immunotherapy, and minimally invasive surgeries
are now available that offer better outcomes and improved quality of life for
lung cancer patients. The landscape of lung cancer treatment has evolved
rapidly. With early detection and personalized treatment plans, we are witnessing
encouraging survival rates."
The
Centre further emphasized that tobacco is not just a personal health hazard but
a public health crisis. Each cigarette damages lung tissue and increases the
risk of cancer. The goal of Medella Karkinos Oncology Institute is not just to
treat cancer, but to prevent it through tobacco control, public education, and
healthier lifestyle choices.
Medella Karkinos Oncology Institute
is located at 87F, BT Road, Kamarhati, Agarpara, Kolkata 700058.
